broderie anglaise tradition
A delicate infant's or child's cap constructed from fine cream-colored cotton with extensive whitework embroidery. The cap features a gathered crown that would fit snugly around the head, transitioning to a deep ruffle brim that would frame the face. The surface is decorated with intricate hand-embroidered floral motifs including roses and trailing vines, executed in white thread on white fabric in the broderie anglaise tradition. Vertical bands of embroidered decoration run down the crown, while the ruffle displays scattered floral sprigs. The edge is finished with delicate scalloping. This type of cap was typical of children's formal dress during the Romantic period, when elaborate needlework demonstrated maternal skill and family status.
