A worn leather firefighter helmet with a distinctive high-crowned, wide-brimmed silhouette characteristic of early 20th century American fire service equipment. The helmet features a prominent front shield with decorative metalwork and text identifying 'Empire Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1'. The leather construction shows significant aging and patina, with areas of wear revealing the natural tan color beneath darker surface treatments. The crown maintains its structural integrity despite weathering, and decorative brass or bronze fittings are visible along the front panel. The wide rear brim provided neck protection from falling debris, while the high crown offered impact resistance essential for firefighting operations.
